Swim in the rambling river, sing along by the crackling fire, play a pick up ball game, share a bountiful feast, or say “I Do” under the fragrant rustling leaves. Mattole River Camp and Retreat is a versatile place to find togetherness

Outdoor Spaces

Mattole River Camp and Retreat offers several outdoor gathering spaces for guests to enjoy.

Shady Grove Gazebo

An ADA accessible raised deck with peaked metal roof, built in benches around the outside, electricity, and lights for night time. Perfect for even a few dozen people to sit comfortably in the shade surrounded by fragrant bay laurel trees.

The Big Field

The first thing you see on entering the camp is a large grassy field with a small chain link baseball backstop on one end. Suitable for ball games, tent camping, or setting out chairs for a wedding or concert. Also a great place to view the Milky Way on a clear night.

River Deck

At the trailhead leading down to the Mattole River, there is a deck perched on the hill overlooking the water. It has benches built in all around, and a ramp rather than steps.

Campfire Circle

At the far end of camp is a rocked in fire pit surrounded by a ring of rustic benches. Great for a big group sing-along or toasting s’mores. There’s plenty of firewood, and a nearby water hose to douse fires safely at the end of the evening.

Tan Oak Lodge Wrap-Around Deck

Good for outdoor dining or even sleeping under the stars!

Center Lawn

Between the lodge, campfire, and the smaller cabins is a large, gently sloping clearing suitable for a wedding, a few dozen people doing yoga, or a big game of tag. Also a great place to catch the moon rising over the treeline.

Mattole River

One side of Mattole River Camp and Retreat is bordered the whole length by the beautiful Mattole River! Suitable for swimming, wading, lounging, or fishing (Jan 1st to March 31st.) Brimming with native species, the Mattole is known to be crystal clear with deep emerald swimming holes dotting its banks. A perfect place to study the local flora and fauna, connect with nature, or simply experience the peace and tranquility of the valley.

Fun Extras

Over 75 years as a summer camp and gathering place has taught us a thing or two about fun!

There is a low profile obstacle course with a cargo net, the “Ping Pong Palace,” a large ball field with baseball backstop, cornhole beanbag game set, lending library, water toys and floats, some family board games, a hammock and swinging bench in the shade, plus a lovely upright piano in the Tan Oak Lodge.
